The 2015 Kentucky Derby won’t take place until the first weekend of May but a few Las Vegas race and sports books are already taking bets. Kentucky Derby betting is underway at the Wynn Las Vegas which was the first property in the city to post futures odds on the 2015 race
Trying to pick which rising three year olds will be competitive, let alone make and win the Kentucky Derby, is no easy task. For that reason even odds on the favorite are fairly high. The current 2015 Kentucky Derby odds show American Pharaoh as the opening favorite at 40/1. Early betting has pushed the price on American Pharaoh to 30/1 and there’s also been an early move on Saratoga’s Hopeful winner Competitive Edge. Competitive Edge opened at 60/1 and took the first bet at the Wynn Las Vegas. He’s taken a steady stream of action and his price has dropped to 40/1.
One of the biggest early moves came on a horse further down in the field. Conquest Panthera won his first race at Del Mar and was opened at 175/1. He took steady action from the open and is now 125/1. Other significant early moves came on Daredevil, who won his debut race at Belmont last Saturday. He opened at 85-1 and now is 60-1. Carpe Diem won in his first time out at Saratoga and was opened at 100-1 before moving to 65-1.
Two of the most high profile horses in the race also opened at 100/1. Cozmic One is the first foal of Zenyatta and recently began training for his competitive career. Also, Jess’s Dream who is the first foal of Rachel Alexandra and had his first workout at Belmont on Friday. Both of these big name horses opened at 100/1. The runner up in the Saratoga Hopeful, I Spent It, also opened at 100/1.
Other horses at relatively short odds: Iroquois winner Lucky Player as well as the third place horse in that race,Hashtag Bourbon both at 60/1. Wake Up Nick opened at 75/1 and a Bob Baffert trained horse named Lord Nelson who won his first race at Del Mar priced at 85/1. Several horses are available at 500/1 which is the highest price posted.
